Using the File Manager
Phase 7 — Remote Access · OpenFrame Onboarding
Need to pull a log off a machine, drop an installer onto it, or clean up a folder? The File Manager lets you browse a remote device's file system and move files both ways — without starting a full remote desktop session. This guide covers opening it and the operations you've got.
Before you start
- The device must be ONLINE (the File Manager connects live to the machine).
- You're on the device's detail page.
Open it
On the device detail page, click the "…" menu → Manage Files. The File Manager opens and you'll see a "File manager connected successfully" confirmation. (It's also reachable from a ticket's "…" menu — Phase 6.)
Browsing
You start at Root and drill in from there — on Windows that's the drives (e.g. **C:**), then folders. A breadcrumb (Root › C: › …) shows where you are and lets you jump back up. Each row lists Name, Size, and Edited date, and a Search box filters the current folder. Click a folder's chevron to go in.
Moving files
The toolbar across the top is your operation set:
- Upload — push a file from your computer onto the device (into the current folder).
- Download — pull a file off the device. Use the per-row "…" menu on a file.
- New Folder — create a folder on the device.
- Copy / Cut / Paste — move or duplicate files within the device's file system. (Copy/Cut light up once you've selected something; Paste drops them in the current folder.)
- Rename / Delete — per-file housekeeping via the row's "…" menu.
Bulk operations
Every row has a checkbox, and Select All grabs everything in the current folder. Select multiple files, then Copy/Cut or delete them together — handy for clearing out a logs folder or pulling a batch of files at once.
Heads-up: the File Manager acts on the real file system with real permissions. Deleting here deletes on the machine. Double-check the path in the breadcrumb before a bulk delete.
When to use it vs. other tools
- File Manager — moving files to/from a machine, browsing the file system, quick cleanup.
- Remote Shell — when you'd rather
copy/mv/rmfrom the command line (Phase 7). - Remote Control — when you need to see the desktop while you work (Phase 7).
Quick checklist
- Device is ONLINE
- Opened "…" → Manage Files and saw the connected confirmation
- Navigated with the breadcrumb and Search
- Used Upload / Download to move files both ways
- Used checkboxes / Select All for bulk Copy/Cut/Delete
- Verified the path before any bulk delete
What's next
That covers moving files. The last piece of remote access is the behavior that trips people up most — copy-paste and special keys: Clipboard & Input Sharing During Remote Sessions.
Based on OpenFrame v0.9.19. The File Manager requires an online device — what's in your console wins.
